What makes a nurse smile?

I know, I shouldn't have posted my just-got-out-of-bed face here, and show my messed up self to the blog world, but that's another story altogether. And get ready to be bored, because there's not much fun or naughty in this post. ;)

The thing that I'm holding in the picture is a greeting card. You see, what I've learned here in England, I've observed that people here still use greeting cards profusely. They would send out a card for any wee bit of something, whether it's a big celebration, or just a simple "hello."

Well, this card was from an elderly patient that was discharged from the ward, a lola.
She was a very lively, and warm lady, and one of the most calm patients I've met, even in moments of excruciating pain. (I couldn't imagine myself having a major surgery and be happy at the same time!)

Before she was sent home, I noticed her scribbling notes on a piece of paper. She said she was writing down the names of the staff, and with her age (90 +), it's amazing for her to keep a good memory.

Then at least a month after that, I received this. She managed to write my name 1/2 right. Why? Instead of my surname "Decena" written, it is "deCenenta (?)".

Yes, including the question mark, which i find amusing and touching because she might have been looking at my I.D. everytime I approached her.

And in the card, she wrote : " Thank you very much for your help & kindness! Kindest Regards,"
Barely over 10 words. It might not be the most personal note I've read. It might not be worth of telling the world. This won't make the town newspaper.

But you see, for a Filipino nurse like me, working day and night like a dog here in the UK (can't help not to quote the Beatles there), the simplest thanks would make me feel that I'm doing alright.

Yes, I do work for the compensation.

But getting "thank you's" from the randomest people who sincerely say their thoughts on the simplest of things, makes a nurse smile.

Too bad it doesn't have return address, but through this, I would like to say my deepest appreciation and will make sure to be the best nurse that I can be, day in, and day out.

My point is, there are things that are simply priceless. Have a good day everyone. :)

  8. Whenever I see my mom's collection of her old greeting cards, I can't help but feel inggit. How I wish it's still the way here in the Philippines. Mas may effort kesa sa send lang ng message sa fb or text. So far, meron pa naman ako mga letters from the past not cards nga lang mas mahal yun eh xD I persuaded my friends to write me a letter when we were still high school. Maybe ganun talaga pag matatanda, because that's their mode of communication before, just like my lolo uncle na foreigner, he gives letter din whenever he's hospitalized. Simpleng letter lang sa akin will make my day na.
