Spotify-able OPM Acts: Hannah Gabi+Autotelic+Turbo Goth

Getting access to up and coming OPM (Original Pilipino Music) artists are mostly done through the social networks and online unless you live under a rock. My weapon of choice for that is Spotify. Taylor Swift may not be a big fan of it and I don't want to debate whether music should be free or not, but it is great for the fans to have free access to music. Whilst on the other hand, paid or not, artists get a greater chance of exposure and reach to their fans and soon-to-be-fans.

I hated that Apple and U2 recently 'gave away' their album in secret that just popped in millions of playlists, it was like shoving down tons of veggies to a 6 year old's mouth. It was that bad. There is still a 'eureka' or a 'kilig' moment accidentally discovering new artists that deliver fresh sounds. Most notably, Pinoy artists!

Here are just some of them. I've been listening to their music for a few weeks now. Drowning myself in LSS-mode to something fresh and hip.

Hannah+Gabi

I heard his songs being used in a youtube series TFTFZx quite often. His songs sort of deliver a melancholic, sad tone yet laid with soft riffs and an uppity beat that make your heart hum the lines. Indie, yet catchy. It/he sounded familiar, and at first I tweeted that 'they' sound a lot like the indie band Ciudad. After a few more investigations via Google, lo and behold: HE, Mikey Amistoso, is the vocalist of the band CIUDAD. Hannah+Gabi is his solo/side-project.

The song 'Waiting for the Rainfall' is OST-worthy of a rom-com flick.

His songs can also be found in bandcamp, and free to stream. Another favourite of mine in his album 'Haha, Yes' is: 'Lost Together'

This isn’t working, for all i know, it’s stifling in here. / i’m holding back tears. / i think it’s better if we get lost together

Grab yourself an onion and cut it while listening to Hannah+Gabi, that'll be the perfect excuse and cover-up for the tears for the feels.

Turbo Goth

This duo would remind some music fans of The White Stripes. But their strengths are in electronica/grunge/punk rock riffs. They may have been established a few years back, but there's a beauty in the 'indie-ness' of their underground appeal.

The song 'Morning Swim' stands out for me. I loved the gentle transition from the lush and mush melody to a more aggressive punk-y take nearing the halfway mark of the track.

While the track 'Velodrome' I believe is more of Sarah and Paolo's distinct Turbo Goth trademark sound.

Sarah, a visual artist, tattoo artist and writer teaming up with Paolo, an electronic musician is a great intro in a legendary rock band biography in the future.

Autotelic

I thank the twitterverse for leading me to this fantastic band. I admit I may be a late-bloomer, but I was hesitant for some reason to listen to a band named CHVRCHES. The synths and electronic pop rock are fine for me, but it took me waaaay too late to catch up on them when I freed myself in accepting that CHVRCHES is not CHURCHES. (Just kidding.) Now, after I got hooked with the album 'The Bones Of What You Believe', I've learned that they were coming over to Manila! So I checked out the opening acts, and youtubed by random this catchy-named-band Autotelic.

I clicked on 'Misteryoso', and boom. First few drum/synth beats, the smooth guitar strum, and the eargasm of the early keyboard notes all coming into place. AND the vocals, in Filipino, in fluid and sweet TAGALOG. All of these happening in the first 18 seconds of the song. Do I sound like a groupie? Then I must be then.

Their electropopsynthdancey tunes make the New Wave fan in me scream.

My fave song from them is 'Dahilan':

Bigyan mo ako ng dahilan / Dumudulas na ang mga kamay /Sa dinami-rami ng pinagdaanan /Hindi ko na maintindihan

If I was transported to my teenage years (It wasn't that far too way back ok) and listened to their songs, they would mould my highschool 'friendzoned/lover' OST tracks.

Please do check them out. If you have any suggestions of up and coming acts, please feel free to suggest them in the comments.

P.S. This is not a paid nor a sponsored post. But for a free ticket, I might reconsider that stand. ;)
