OK. So maybe I’ve never actually been to Lapland, but I guy can dream can’t he? After all, I know exactly what I would do if I ever did get the opportunity to visit this awesome country. So whether you are holiday dreaming, or planning a trip for real, read on for my top Lapland picks.
Northern Lights
Lapland is one of, if not the greatest place on the entire earth to see the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis as it’s also known. It is a natural phenomenon that lights up the sky with greens, blues, and pinks, that resembles something like a dancing rainbow.
As much of Lapland is located within the Arctic Circle, you can see the Northern Lights pretty much all year round. Although, if you are not up for hiking across the open and freezing snow plains to get a look, you can try winter glamping in Lapland instead. As this allows you to stay in the comfort and warmth of a glass igloo. Something that provides a perfect view of the sky above and natures light show. Just imagine going to sleep to that! Amazing!
Dog Sledding
Dog sledding is another activity that looks like a lot of fun, and Lapland is definitely the place to try it. There are plenty of locations like Harriniva that are perfect for this sport-come mode of transport, and you will find a plethora of companies willing to take you out on the ice and snow. It is a pretty high-speed activity though, as those Huskies can run fast! So so bear this in mind before booking your place.
Santa Claus Village
For the young, and the young at heart there is Santa Claus Village. An all year round attraction that gives you a behind the scenes glimpse into what Mr. Claus’ life is like on the other 364 days of the year.
There you will find his home, and a post office, as well as maybe even get the opportunity to meet the big man himself and get your order in for this year. A word to the wise though, if you a more of a Grinch sort you will hate this place!
Luvattumaa - Levi Ice Gallery
Another location in Lapland that is must see is the Levi Ice Gallery in the Luvattumaa. This place is crazy! It's an amazing ice cavern full of beautifully lit ice sculptures that give it an unearthly and ethereal feel.
You can even stay there too, in a room completely constructed out of ice! Just make sure that you remember not to leave the heating on too high, as you could wake up in a great big puddle! Luckily, they do give you mattresses and furs to sleep on, to keep you toasty warm! There is also a river spa in Luvattumaa that is open all year, as well as a traditional Finnish hut restaurant where you can sample delicacies as reindeer tartar, smoked salmon, and beetroot and blue cheese soup! Yum!
