Many men are notoriously reluctant to seek help for their ailments although younger men are getting better at being proactive about their health than older gents. This is good news because when you have a problem, the sooner you get it checked out by a doctor, the better it is going to be for your health. If you experience any of the following symptoms, it becomes even more important that you see a doctor as soon as possible because they could be a sign that something serious is going on with you…
A Lump in the Testicles
Due to its sensitive nature, this is one of those things that many men are reluctant to speak to their doctor about, but it is also one of the most potentially dangerous symptoms too. A lot of the time, it will be nothing more than a cyst, but it could be cancer and it could affect your health and your sex life. Doctors don’t get embarrassed - they have seen everything before many times over - and neither should you. Go to your doctor today because if it is something serious, the sooner they catch it, the better your chances of recovering fully will be.
Depression
Depression and other mental health issues still sadly have a stigma attached to them in some circles and since many men believe that they have to be strong, they end up not getting the help they need when they need it. This is so awful because depression can be treated with medication or therapy or even a combination of both, and the longer it is left untreated, the greater hold it can take. In the UK alone, suicide is the leading killer of men aged between 20-49. That’s a shocking statistic that seriously needs addressing by the government and health bodies, but also one that we can all do our part to change by being open and honest about the way we are feeling and seeking help as soon as we realise we have a problem.
Erectile Dysfunction
Another symptom that a lot of men find it difficult to talk about is erectile dysfunction. Many men think that it is a temporary problem that can be solved by some erectile dysfunction help in the form of pills, and it often can, or that it is a natural part of aging, but that isn’t necessarily true. What a lot of men don’t realise is that it could also be one symptom of diabetes, heart disease or even prostate cancer - a particularly nasty form of cancer that can often go undetected and spread quite quickly. Don’t take any chances and speak to your doctor, not least because you shouldn’t have to suffer with a poor or non-existent sex life either!
Not Being Able to Pee
If you are unable to pee, you find it hard to pee or you can’t stop going to the toilet, you need to see your GP asap because it could be a symptom of an enlarged prostate or possibly even cancer (although that is not quite as likely).
Changes in the Bowel Department
If you spot blood in your stool, there’s pain in that area, your constipated or you have diarrhoea a lot more than is normal or even usual, you might be suffering from something like IBS or Crohn’s which can be pretty uncomfortable and which will need treating, but more seriously, it could indicate bowel cancer, which is another nasty form of cancer that takes far too many lives. Deal with any embarrassment you might have and get yourself seen.
Oh, and while we’re on the subject of bleeding, if you’re bleeding from anywhere at any time, get that checked out too.
Coughing
We all get coughs from time to time, and usually, it’s just down to a chest infection (although they can get quite nasty by themselves), a cold or a virus, but if it’s persistent and nothing you try will shift it, it’s worth getting it checked out because it could actually be something far more serious such as heart failure, lung cancer or a pulmonary embolism and when that is the case, speed truly is of the essence.
You might think that you’re wasting the doctor’s time or that you don’t have time to visit the GP, you may be embarrassed or shy, but when it comes to your health, you have to be proactive because even a slight delay in addressing your symptoms could worsen your condition exponentially and no one wants that.
